I’ve been moving a (dead) snail’s pace in my New York Toy Fair 2017 LEGO Summer 2017 sets photos preview coverage, so I’m going to try to bang out previews for a few sets today while I have some spare time. And with that in mind, let’s talk about two sets in one preview! Not only is the popular LEGO Star Wars Buildable figure line continuing this summer with the Stormtrooper Commander, but we’re getting our first-ever vehicle set in this sub-theme: the Scout Trooper & Speeder Bike!
And this summer, not only will those fans get two new Imperial Troopers to add to their ranks, but they’ll also have their first opportunity to purchase a vehicle: the Buildable figure-scaled Speederbike!
First, the LEGO Stormtrooper Commander 75531 with Orange Pauldron. I’m genuinely not sure exactly what’s going on with this character choice, as there were no Stormtroopers with Pauldrons in the Original Trilogy other than the Sandtroopers (which this does not appear to be).
I’m not sure if TLG got their wires crossed and meant to make a First Order Stormtrooper Commander from The Force Awakens or what, but the figure is what it is. Personally, I’d consider him a Sandtrooper despite what the box says, but that’s just me.
Far, far more exciting than the Stormtrooper Commander is the aforementioned figure and vehicle set, though! The 75532 LEGO Star Wars Scout Trooper & Speeder Bike set will include both the first-ever Buildable Imperial Scout Trooper and the Speeder Bike itself.
The Scout Troopers are probably my favorite Imperial Trooper type from the Original Trilogy, so I’m glad to see them getting the spotlight in this growing series of Buildable figures. The super-articulated nature of these toys lends itself well to riding, say, a huge bike–and now these figures will actually have one to ride!
I didn’t have a ruler with me at New York Toy Fair 2017 last month (what, you carry a ruler around with you?), but the 75532 Speederbike was quite large and looked to be accurately proportionate to me.
I can’t think of any other small Star Wars vehicles that could be easily done in this scale (can you?), so this Speederbike may sadly be the first and last vehicle we get in this sub-theme. It’ll look great on a shelf of troopers, though!
With the figures alone retailing for about $25 ordinarily for 100 pieces (as the Stormtrooper Commander is), 30 bucks for about 350 pieces of the LEGO Speeder Bike actually feels like a plenty fair value to me.
The LEGO Star Wars Summer 2017 sets will be available online and in stores officially June 1st 2017. That’s earlier than usual, but that’s likely because TLG is planning a huge rollout for The Last Jedi LEGO sets on September 1st 2017, just three months later. I’ll post the official photos and links to order the new sets as soon as TLG releases them later on this spring.
What do you think of the two summer 2017 LEGO Star Wars Buildable figure sets, brick fans? Are you thrilled at the chance to build a Speeder Bike in this scale, and are there any other vehicles you think could work in this line? What characters are you hoping to see for The Last Jedi (if any)?
