Of all the LEGO Star Wars 2016 sets officially revealed at New York Toy Fair 2016, the one set that I thought took the prize for coolest isn’t a movie-based set at all. In fact, it doesn’t even contain one vehicle–it contains two! It’s the Rebels-era LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced vs. A-Wing Starfighter 75150 set!
But one set will Vader will be present in happens to also be a set that’s got his name in the title: from Rebels Season 2, 75150 LEGO Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced vs. A-Wing Starfighter is flying into stores this summer!
We’ve had numerous TIE Advanced LEGO vehicles released over the years, but this one is a little different from its predecessors for one big reason: it’s based off the designs from the Star Wars Rebels animated series.
As a result, Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced is noticeably stubbier than it has been in prior appearances. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, mind you–it’s just different from what we’re used to. I rather like the slightly different Rebels take on this classic ship, honestly.
As with most of the Summer 2016 Star Wars and City sets at Toy Fair International this year, only generic white minifigures were displayed as placeholders instead of the actual figures that will come with the sets.
Luckily, we know from the packaging exactly what minifigs come with this set: updated a Rebels versions of Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, Sabine Wren and an A-Wing Pilot. None of the characters are new, although it is worth noting Sabine’s season 2 hair is included (but no helmet) and this is a female A-Wing Pilot minifigure! Have we seen any generic female Rebel pilots released previously?
The cost of the Star Wars license needs to be taken into account, of course, but this set still seems like a terrible value, being only $10 cheaper than the awesome LEGO Spider-Man Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Battle set that’s also due out this summer.
The 2016 LEGO Star Wars summer sets are due out earlier than usual, in June 2016! That means the sets will likely start hitting some stores in May–just three months away! With so many larger sets in the wave, it’s definitely worth starting to save your pennies now.
What do you think of the new Rebels Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced vs. A-Wing Starfighter set, brick fans? Is this impressive set worthy of its somewhat high price-per-piece, or will you be passing on this two-in-one set this summer?
