LEGO Star Wars Summer 2016: TIE Advanced vs. A-Wing!

Of all the LEGO Star Wars 2016 sets officially revealed at New York Toy Fair 2016, the one set that I thought took the prize for coolest isn’t a movie-based set at all. In fact, it doesn’t even contain one vehicle–it contains two! It’s the Rebels-era LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced vs. A-Wing Starfighter 75150 set!

Although he’s the most popular Star Wars character of all and one of the most popular villains in movie history, Darth Vader is not appearing in minifigure form in a lot of the 2016 LEGO Star Wars sets. In fact, Vader doesn’t appear in any of the winter 2016 sets that have been released thus far this year.

But one set will Vader will be present in happens to also be a set that’s got his name in the title: from Rebels Season 2, 75150 LEGO Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced vs. A-Wing Starfighter is flying into stores this summer!

2016 LEGO Star Wars Rebels Darth Vader's TIE AdvancedWe’ve had numerous TIE Advanced LEGO vehicles released over the years, but this one is a little different from its predecessors for one big reason: it’s based off the designs from the Star Wars Rebels animated series.

Darth Vader's TIE Advanced vs. A-Wing Starfighter LEGO Summer 2016 SetAs a result, Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced is noticeably stubbier than it has been in prior appearances. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, mind you–it’s just different from what we’re used to. I rather like the slightly different Rebels take on this classic ship, honestly.

2016 LEGO Star Wars A-Wing Starfighter 75150 RebelsThe other main component of this set is the Rebels A-Wing Starfighter. Colored in classic grey and green, this A-Wing looks a bit larger and a bit sleeker than previous interpretations of the A-Wing.

Summer 2016 LEGO Star Wars TIE Advanced VS. A-Wing Set 2016 Toy FairI’m a big fan of the fastest ship in the Rebel Alliance, so I’m excited for this new version of an old favorite!

New York Toy Fair 2016 LEGO Star Wars 75150 Minifigures Generic WhiteAs with most of the Summer 2016 Star Wars and City sets at Toy Fair International this year, only generic white minifigures were displayed as placeholders instead of the actual figures that will come with the sets.

75150 LEGO Star Wars Minifigures Tarkin Sabine A-Wing Pilot VaderLuckily, we know from the packaging exactly what minifigs come with this set: updated a Rebels versions of Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, Sabine Wren and an A-Wing Pilot. None of the characters are new, although it is worth noting Sabine’s season 2 hair is included (but no helmet) and this is a female A-Wing Pilot minifigure! Have we seen any generic female Rebel pilots released previously?

LEGO Darth Vader's TIE Advanced vs. A-Wing Price Release Date Toy Fair 2016

Here’s where the deal breaker is going to happen for many Star Wars fans: the price. For 702 pieces, this set will carry an MSRP of $89.99. That’s nearly 13 cents per piece–a terrible value for a set with only four minifigures! For a set that doesn’t contain any ships or characters that we’ve never seen before, I’m really surprised by this price-tag.

The cost of the Star Wars license needs to be taken into account, of course, but this set still seems like a terrible value, being only $10 cheaper than the awesome LEGO Spider-Man Web Warriors Ultimate Bridge Battle set that’s also due out this summer.

LEGO Star Wars Rebels A-Wing vs. Darth Vader's TIE Advanced 75150 Set June 2016The 2016 LEGO Star Wars summer sets are due out earlier than usual, in June 2016! That means the sets will likely start hitting some stores in May–just three months away! With so many larger sets in the wave, it’s definitely worth starting to save your pennies now.

What do you think of the new Rebels Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced vs. A-Wing Starfighter set, brick fans? Is this impressive set worthy of its somewhat high price-per-piece, or will you be passing on this two-in-one set this summer?
